In this collaborative presentation, Professor Erin McKenna will report on research she did with PLU students Sarah Curtis and Jon Stout. They interviewed six different farmers about their views of nature and how those views affect the way they raise animals. The views and practices of these farms are examined in terms of several philosophical theories--Ecofeminism, American Pragmatism, and the land ethic. After the paper is presented the students will comment on their experience. Erin McKenna is a Professor of Philosophy, former Chair of Philosophy and former chair of Women's Studies. She specializes in feminist theory and American Pragmatism. One of her publications is a volume titled Animal Pragmatism in which she was co-editor. This came out in the spring of 2004 from Indiana University Press. McKenna has been teaching at PLU since 1992.
